News for the day

January 28, 2005
Not wanting to offend any Egyptians or anything, but I learned of an interesting story yesterday.

Background info: In Egypt, they take their religion very seriously (not a bad thing, by the way), and sex before marriage is a HUGE no-no. If a woman becomes pregnant without being married and she is from a wealthy family, she will have an abortion and then have surgery to cover it all up. After which, the family will then find the most unsuspecting suitor for their daughter and marry her off at once. If the woman is from a poor family, her father or brother will simply kill her so as not to bring shame to the family. Young people get around this by have urfi (I think that's the name) marriages, or "secret marriages", which are contracts stating that the two are married, but it's not official. It's just a contract signed by both people saying that they're married. Lots of wealthy men use these contracts to have affairs without ever calling them affairs. By having these contracts, young people in Egypt can have sex without being "married", but still not bring shame to themselves because in some twisted way, they're married.

Story: A 27 year old woman from a wealthy family recently gave birth to a daughter. She claims that she had a secret marriage with a man (also from a wealthy family) who is now denying ever knowing her. She claims that they had a urfi contract, and that after telling him she was pregnant, he asked for both contracts saying that he wanted to make it "official"...and she hasn't seen them since. Since DNA testing is very new in Egypt, the guy isn't being forced (yet) to supply one and the woman is being ostracized (I can't spell) by her own family and most of Egypt. She had purposely held off telling anyone until it was too late to have an abortion because she didn't like the idea of it, and although her close family supports her, the rest do not.

I'm not exactly sure where I was going with this story, but I figured it would provoke some thought from my faithful readers. I'm glad that even though abortion is a huge deal these days, we don't have to live in a society where woman are forced to have important choices made for them.

In other news: A man was fed to some lions in South Africa.

Now that's unjustice.
